Cap Ferrat

Lumière Cap Ferrat: a house by the sea.

Set on the rocks below Chemin des Oliviers, Lumière is a Mediterranean house where the day is allowed to take its time. Guests swim from the steps cut into the rock, take lunch under the pergola, watch the light go long over the bay from the Bar Cyprès, and stay for dinner.

A cellar two floors down, a garden that feeds the kitchen, live music on the lower terrace at the weekend, and a small boutique of the things we use ourselves. Every part of the house is arranged around the water it faces.

“We are not a French restaurant. We are a Mediterranean house that happens to stand in France.”

Matteo Ferrante · Founder

A whitewashed terrace above the sea, its long stone table and benches looking out over the water.

Since 1998

Bought for the light and one lemon tree.

Matteo Ferrante bought the house in 1996. It had been a fisherman's store, then a pension, then nothing at all for eleven years — but it had a lemon tree in the courtyard and light coming off the water until nine at night, and he decided that was enough to go on.

Lumière opened two summers later with nine tables and no written menu. You were told what the boats had brought in that morning, and you agreed to it. Twelve tables now, and the menu is written down. Almost everything else is as it was: the same limestone, the same doorway left open until the light has gone, the same lemon tree.

The house keeps a short radius. Oil and olives come from a grove eleven kilometres inland, fish from three boats we have bought from for two decades, and the bread is milled and baked here each morning. What is not of this coast is not served.

Those Who Keep It

A very short chain of command.

Twelve tables, three people who have been here long enough to stop counting, and a kitchen small enough that everyone can hear the pass.

A long table laid for lunch beneath a vine pergola, the sea beyond it.

La Cuisine de Lumière

The whole coast, meant to be passed around.

Élise Marchand cooks the coastline rather than one country of it. From the lemon groves of Menton and the oil of the Alpilles to the grilled fish, brine and charred vegetables of the Cyclades — Provence, Liguria, Catalonia and the islands sit on the same carte because they have always eaten the same way.

Plates arrive in the middle of the table and are passed around. Loup de Mer carved for the whole party, Poulpe à la Braise off the vine embers, Crudo di Mare in oil pressed the same week. Nothing is plated for one person alone unless you ask for it that way — and we are glad to.
